I have noticed that my friends page here is completely empty of any posts. I tried logging on using my alternate firefox profile (no extra add-ons) and internet explorer and it still does not work. Anybody else seen this before?

Has anybody registered yet? I have an idea about what I would like to go to, but I am not sure about the events that cost money ... any thoughts? I know it says that the registration is flexible, but I do not know if that means that we a get a refund if miss an event :)

I am visiting a friend in socal in October. We know that we are going to spend one day in Santa Barbara and one day in San Diego. In each place we have plans for after dinner, but the rest of the day is pretty free. Any suggestions?

Anyone else planning on going? I am looking at possible hotels (google actually returned the Notel Motel as one of the results). One option is the Sheraton Fairplex in Pomona ($99/night) where they are supposed to have a shuttle going to and from campus. Another option is the Doubletree Hotel which is about a mile from campus (~$120/night), but I am not sure if we would really want to walk to and from campus. Everything else would require a car and dealing with parking.

Any other thoughts or suggestions? (and yes, I am starting my planning really early!)

I tried both of their tests ... the "focus" test seems to indicate that I am a very low multi-tasker (for both two distractions and six distractions I got a score of 2) while the "juggling" test seems to indicate that I am a very high multi-tasker (my times for "switching between tasks" and "repeating tasks" were as long as or longer than the high multi-taskers ... for some reason my "additional time for switching" was negative).

I think what this really indicates is that I am much better with shapes/colors than with letters/numbers.

Facebook rant

I finally got the message about pages on facebook. I chose not to link my information to these pages because I do not want all my information being completely public. The problem with that is ...

If you don't link to any Pages, the following sections on your profile will be empty:

* Work and Education
* Current City
* Hometown
* Likes and Interests

WTF?!? You cannot even have something like your job or school there without it being listed publicly?

I also just noticed that I used to be part of a lot of "groups" ... I do not see them on my profile anymore, although I can find a list of them.

The Electronic Frontier Foundation ( http://www.eff.org/ ) has had some interesting articles recently about what has been going on. One is a timeline of Facebook's privacy policy. For example:

2005 -- No personal information that you submit to Thefacebook will be available to any user of the Web Site who does not belong to at least one of the groups specified by you in your privacy settings.

2010 -- When you connect with an application or website it will have access to General Information about you. The term General Information includes your and your friends’ names, profile pictures, gender, user IDs, connections, and any content shared using the Everyone privacy setting. ... The default privacy setting for certain types of information you post on Facebook is set to “everyone.” ... Because it takes two to connect, your privacy settings only control who can see the connection on your profile page. If you are uncomfortable with the connection being publicly available, you should consider removing (or not making) the connection.

Right now I am trying to figure out whether or not I want to give up on facebook altogether. I will admit that I am one of those people that plays all those games on facebook. I like helping people with whatever "challenge" is going on and being able to buy/decorate stuff (it is not like I have the money to do that in the real world ;). I also like being a "fan" (I think that has changed to "like" now ... they also have not been private for awhile, but I have been trying to not let that bother me) of people/bands/shows/whatever within facebook because it has been a really simple way of getting updates for all of them in one place. Now I am not so sure that I want to have much of anything on facebook anymore ... *sigh*

What is with this new "outboundlink.me" stuff on LJ?

I only noticed it because I tried clicking on a link while on my friends page and it would not let me. A quick google search indicated that it was because I use NoScript and I have livejournal.com whitelisted, but not this new site outboundlink.me ... I forbid livejournal.com and now I can click links again. Unfortunately LJ cannot detect what I am listening to through last.fm anymore.

From what I have read, which could be wrong, firefox needs to talk to outboundlink.me when dealing with links because LJ now sends information about what page you are on and the link that you are *hovering* over (you do not need to click on the link for this information to be sent). They are doing this because they are changing links to places like amazon.com to insert their own affiliate codes if one is not already present.

I have been feeling sick since Saturday (the day after I flew back to CO). I was one of the last people to get on the bus today so there were no seats left ... and just as I was thinking that I was entirely too dizzy to be standing up and keeping my balance in a moving vehicle, a guy stands up and tells me that I could take his seat :)

new apple patent

Its distinctive feature is a design that doesn’t simply invite a user to pay attention to an ad — it also compels attention. The technology can freeze the device until the user clicks a button or answers a test question to demonstrate that he or she has dutifully noticed the commercial message.
